Book Restoration Project - The Lions
Club Sliema National Library Book Restoration Project was launched
in 2009 with the scope of funding the restoration of precious
volumes and manuscripts held at the National Library. Apart from
these restorations the Club purchased a Leaf Casting Machine which
was presented to the Hon. Dolores Cristina Minister for Education.
The project is ongoing.
• A Drug Awareness Campaign, which amounted to U.S.$18,000 in
conjunction with Caritas Malta.
• Organ Donation Campaign – Lions Club Sliema originated this
campaign and in its first year 15000 people registered as donors.
Due to the unavailability of some medical facilities, most of the
organs are donated to other countries, whilst the Health authorities
retain those organs that can be transplanted in Malta. This campaign
is on going.
• Restorations
of Frescoes at St. Agatha Catacombs - This project whose cost
totalled over U.S.$ 20,000 was one of the first projects of its kind
to be undertaken in Malta. These frescoes date back to the 12th
Century and are the tangible proof of the early Christianity in
Malta. Due to their historic importance, leading world experts in
the field regularly visit the frescoes.
• Restoration of Religious Niches in Sliema - This major
project was supported with a booklet on the subject together with a
photographic exhibition.
Along with the other four Maltese Lions Clubs, the Club participated
in the financing of the installation of equipment for the
screening of patients suffering from Glaucoma, Cataracts, Diabetic
Retinopathy and other Eye-related conditions in Government run
Clinics.
