Welcome to the Lions Club Sliema Web Site.
It
is customary for the welcome piece of an incoming President to give
a brief history of the Club’s achievements. Although I am the
first one to praise my predecessors’ successes, one may look up for
this information in the archive item in
this website. I prefer to look forward whilst building on the
past. However the present is with us and must be pondered on.
Lions Club Sliema is synonymous with success
achieved through hard work and being President of a Club that boasts
a prestigious and glorious past is a grave responsibility.
Although I have already served in this position in the years
1992-1994, I admit that this year should prove to be quite
challenging.
We ended the year with the untimely demise of our
much respected Lion Secretary Joseph Caruana. The Club inherited a
deep void, and as usually happens in the Club, another hard working
member Lion Joe Messina stepped in and took over the post
temporarily. However, he is now our fully fledged Secretary and
has shown that he possesses all the know-how to execute his duties
efficiently.
Then we had to compete with the Football World
Cup. The Annual Awards Night had to be cancelled. That was not
enough. We had to cancel also our Annual Spare Ribs Night which is
normally patronised by not less than 200 persons and is considered
to be our best annual fund raiser.
In spite of these disappointments we ended the
previous year with the launching of a very ambitious project. The
National Library Book Restoration Project was inaugurated by the
Minister of Education Dolores Cristina on the 25th May,
2010 at the National Library where a sizeable audience could see
some of the books that we intend to restore. As a start we aim to
raise €9000 by December and I am pleased to report that our project
has created much interest in the media and in other quarters. This
is a long term project and it is planned that the Club’s involvement
should carry on for at least three years.
Another commitment that needs much thought and
hard work is the 2010 Gathering. It is expected that Lions from
various countries will join us in this event which will end with our
Charter Night on the 20th November. Some of our Twinned
Clubs have already shown interest to attend and we expect this
year’s celebration of Charter to be a memorable one.
There are other activities in the programming
stage, but these shall be announced in due time. I feel great
enthusiasm from the members which guarantees another successful year
for Lions Club Sliema, the Club we all work for in true Lionistic
Spirit.
